Here Come The Holidays...Happy and Otherwise.
We at CASA of Los Angeles sincerely wish you and yours the very happiest of holidays this year. We also want to remind you that, for more than 25,000 children in Los Angeles County, the holiday season will not be so happy. That's the number of uprooted kids that are under Court supervision because they were abused, neglected or abandoned by their families. Most live in foster care and never return to their birth families. Sadly, without guidance and support, many are likely to face unemployment, homelessness, incarceration and suicide as young adults.
What's more, the situation continues to get worse with a stagnant economy and rising poverty levels. The most recent Census Bureau report clearly shows that the number of Americans living in poverty is trending upward dramatically. It's not difficult to see very how this economic scenario is playing out on our community's children in foster care. Research shows that poverty is the single best predictor of child abuse and neglect. What we're looking at is an ever increasing number of impoverished households and a corresponding increase in children being removed from their families for their own protection.
At CASA/LA we are doing everything we can to reverse this downward spiral. CASA/LA's trained volunteers help foster children access the medical, legal and financial aid that will carry them through their fragile childhood and prepare them to lead normal, productive lives.
Los Angeles County has the largest concentration of foster children in the country. Getting them the help they need is a monumental task and we need as much help as we can get. Every $2500 you contribute to CASA of Los Angeles provides a child in foster care with one full year of a Court-Appointed Special Advocate. Please help us with a generous contribution this holiday season so that we can improve the prospect of happiness for these unfortunate and vulnerable kids...not just during the holidays but throughout their lives.
