This training will cover the basics of Special Education. We will discuss what special education is, how eligibility is determined, and who has the authority to make decisions on education for youth living in foster care. We will cover what warning signs to look for if you think your youth might be in need of special education and how to go about requesting a formal assessment. Once the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process has begun, we will help volunteers know how to prepare for the IEP meeting and understand the individual components of an IEP. Lastly, attendees will learn about specific special education services available to youth in need of educational support.
