What are common misconceptions about gangs?
What are the challenges associated with working with youth susceptible to gang involvement?
Join CASA/LA for an in-service training about gangs with expert Dr. Robert Hernandez, a professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak Peck School of Social Work. This in-service will provide an overview of working with vulnerable youth populations affected by structural violence. Taking a holistic perspective in working with vulnerable youth populations susceptible to gang involvement and the justice system, theories will be examined to best understand the culture of gang affiliation. The historical context of street socializing youth residing in urban cities such as Los Angeles will be explored. Current interventions and policies designed to address the issue of structural violence will be reviewed. By exploring potential root causes of street socializing youth, we can critically develop practices that address challenges for communities immersed in the cycle of community structural violence through empowerment models of practice.
