Introduction to Juvenile Justice System
Although CASA/LA advocacy has primarily focused on the overall well-being of youth in the dependency system, CASA volunteers also advocate for youth in the juvenile justice system. Navigating two systems can be challenging for youth and their families. CASA volunteers are in a unique position to support youth involved in dual systems—but how does one navigate and advocate? This in-service serves as an introduction to the juvenile justice system. We will share a brief history of the juvenile justice system, explain how the juvenile justice and dependency system interact, and share relevant research. We will introduce best practices around dual–status advocacy and how CASAs can help youth navigate two complex systems. Lastly, we will provide community resources and introduce CASA/LA’s juvenile justice handbook.
