Harm Reduction with Substance Use in Adolescence
Substance use is not rare in the absolute curious stage of adolescence; even more so in adolescents with serious emotional disturbance (SED) or youth living with extensive histories of trauma. This workshop is designed to assist social service professionals to utilize a harm reduction approach when addressing adolescents who use substances. Harm reduction is about prevention through education. Therefore, by educating youth regarding the harmful consequences of substance use and providing options for safer use or healthier coping strategies while utilizing a non-judgmental approach of unconditional positive regard, adolescents are more likely to reduce use.
